Q: Is strong pain medication necessary for cancer pain?
A: For moderate to severe cancer pain, strong opioids (morphine, oxycodone) are the standard of care per WHO guidelines. Fear of addiction should not prevent adequate pain relief — addiction is extremely rare in cancer patients receiving opioids for genuine pain.
Q: My family member has been told nothing more can be done. Can you help?
A: "Nothing more can be done for the cancer" does not mean nothing more can be done for the pain and suffering. Palliative interventional procedures, opioid optimization, and home-based comfort care can make a profound difference even in advanced disease.
